This has created a new problem: “AI‑slop”—low‑quality, repetitive, or even nonsensical material generated in bulk without meaningful human oversight, according to a recent article from Hawke Media. Such content lacks originality and often contains errors or misleading information.
To understand how marketing teams are confronting this problem, The Growth Seat surveyed 100 U.S. marketing professionals and business leaders. Respondents were only able to participate if their organization used AI for content generation in some capacity. The research explored how organizations use AI for content, the challenges they face, how serious they perceive “AI‑slop” to be, and what tools and strategies they are using to mitigate it.
Where is AI used most?
AI is most prevalent in channels that demand speed and scale. Using weighted percentages, the top content types where respondents’ organizations apply AI are social media updates at 42.8 percent, product descriptions at 40.1 percent, website copy at 36.2 percent, and email copy at 35.2 percent. Ad copy and blog posts follow at 28.1 and 27.8 percent.
What AI changes about productivity
Productivity gains are real, though not universal. Combining “Slightly Increased” and “Significantly Increased,” 75.0 percent report faster time savings unweighted, and 71.5 percent on a weighted basis. For workflow efficiency, 72.0 percent report increases, unweighted, and 69.4 percent, weighted. For content volume, the increases are 69.0% unweighted and 66.0% weighted. The signal is consistent: AI helps teams move faster and publish more, but one in four to one in three teams are not yet seeing gains, and a minority perceive slight decreases. The net takeaway is that speed can be achieved, but quality and reliability still need design attention.
Familiarity and perceived risk of AI slop
Familiarity with the concept of AI slop is high. Weighted results show 33.1 percent “Very familiar,” 35.6 percent “Somewhat familiar,” and 21.5 percent “Slightly familiar.” Only 9.9 percent report not being familiar. Concern is equally broad: 71.2 percent agree or strongly agree that AI slop is a significant threat to marketing content quality in their organization. The distribution skews toward the top of the scale, with 36 percent selecting the highest agreement point and 35 percent the next-highest. The risk is not a niche worry among skeptics. It is a mainstream issue for teams already using AI.
Where quality breaks
When asked about the top challenges in maintaining quality with AI, respondents most often weighted the following: detecting and correcting misleading information (53.6 percent), ensuring factual accuracy (51.4 percent), maintaining brand voice and tone (41.7 percent), and avoiding repetitive phrasing (39.9 percent). Scalability of human review trails at 27.5 percent. The pattern is clear. The hardest problems are truth and trust: staying accurate, avoiding subtle errors, and sounding like the brand, not the model’s default voice.
What teams are doing to mitigate the risk of AI slop
The most common safeguard is human-in-the-loop review, selected by 53.5 percent on a weighted basis. Custom model training with specific guidelines follows at 42.9 percent. Tool-based defenses are common but not dominant: plagiarism detection (31.3 percent), semantic relevance and coherence checks (31.7 percent), and advanced AI content moderation (31.0 percent). Thirteen percent say they use none of these, which may again reflect either a low perceived risk or process gaps. Clearly, the emphasis on human review is sensible, although the data later show that these measures are only moderately effective in practice.
How effective current defenses are
On a 0 to 100 scale, teams rate their existing anti-slop strategies at a weighted mean of 65.7, with a median of 69. Scores span the full range, which implies inconsistent implementation across organizations and channels. In qualitative terms, this is a passing grade, not a standard to rest on. It suggests that many organizations have implemented basic precautions but have not yet established a robust, measurable quality system that can scale with increasing content volume. Teams are securing real productivity gains, yet their defenses against quality drift are only moderately effective.
What users still want from tools
Open-ended responses were varied, but several themes appeared repeatedly, including requests for better accuracy and fact-checking, faster operation, more transparent outputs, and, in a smaller number of cases, more human oversight or a human-like voice. None of these themes is surprising, yet their recurrence shows where buyers feel shortchanged. Therefore, vendors that reduce verification labor, surface citations, and adapt reliably to brand voice will meet the market where the pain is.
What this means for leaders
Taken together, these findings argue for a shift from ad-hoc prompt craft to an operating system for AI content. The system should define where AI is allowed. It should connect generation tools to an authoritative source of truth. Further, it should enforce lightweight checks that are easy to follow at speed. Additionally, it should also measure both speed and quality, not one or the other, and it should concentrate the heaviest safeguards on the highest-risk assets. Most importantly, it should be owned by someone who sits at the intersection of content, data, and compliance, rather than left to diffuse team habit.

Encourage staff to question and verify AI-generated claims, as recommended by experts who warn of the risks of misinformation.
- Develop clear metrics to evaluate AI‑generated content. Many respondents lacked specific KPIs to measure AI content quality. Organizations should adopt quantitative measures. These include engagement rates, click‑through rates, time on page, and bounce rates. These metrics help monitor how audiences respond to AI‑generated content. Qualitative reviews assessing coherence, brand voice, and originality are also essential. Standardizing metrics will help teams determine whether mitigation strategies are effective and enable continuous improvement.
- Invest in training and ethical guidelines. Although AI increases content volume and saves time, there is a risk that staff will over‑rely on it. Provide training on AI’s capabilities and limitations, emphasizing the responsible use of AI and the importance of human creativity. Clear ethical guidelines should address data privacy, bias mitigation, and sustainability concerns raised by some respondents. Training will help employees recognize AI slop and maintain high standards.
